I have started working on a 3D house model in 3Ds max, so I thought I should keep a record of the progress as I continue to model the 3D house towards completion. You should check back on this post as I will be upgrading it from time to time when I make any major changes.

I started working on this 3D model in 3Ds max from a house plan. The house has a garage and others rooms you might find in an average traditional house. I am free modelling this object, so there is not any special measurements applied just observation. I started from a simple box the continued to extrude it to map it to the floor plan. After mapping it I then extruded it upwards until the height you see. The roofs I just used a box again and connected each in half using the connect tool then pulled up to create the roof. I will keep upgrading the progress here.

I have just created this 3D cooking pan object in 3D max Studio. The 3D model was very easy and quick to create. I started from cylinder, then converted to a Editable poly. Then I continued to edit the cylinder surface. Using the extrude and connect tools. It was very quick and straight forward.

This 3D model was created in 3Ds max studio. It took a very short amount of time to complete. I used the sphere, then cut it in half. applied the shell modifier then collapsed it. I continued to adding the stand using extrude. Finally I applied the MeshSmooth modifier after correct a few geometry mistakes.

Just modelled a really simple Rubbish trash can. The bin was modelled in 3Ds max studio using box modelling. It was very quick to complete. I late applied the shell modifier to create the inside of the object. The modifier levels are still there in the modifier stack if you happen to download this 3D model.

In this very simple 3D text tutorial I’ll be showing you how to use the 3Ds max text shape together with the bevel modifier to create 3D text. This tutorial is suitable for an absolute beginner. If you would prefer to walk through this tutorial quickly scroll down to the quick tutorial summary which concentrates on getting the 3D text complete than the details of learning. Now the most important area of this all topic is the Bevel modifier and I shall give you a detailed description of the Bevel modifier below.

Bevel modifier

The Bevel modifier extrudes shapes into 3D objects and applies a flat or round bevel to the edges of the 3D object. It’s a very useful modifier and the concept behind it is used a lot in 3Ds max modelling. You’ll use this concept a lot when working on you 3D models. This modifier is commonly used to create 3D text and logos, but you can apply it to any shape. The term shape in 3Ds max is used to describe 2D shapes, the same shapes you might create in Photoshop or Illustrator. They’re just composed of straight lines and are not 3D.

Summary

First you will create a spline shape from the create tab and apply the Bevel modifier. The Bevel modifier uses a shape as the base of a 3D object. Then extrudes the shape up to four levels and assign an outline amount for each level. You can also apply other settings to make the 3D text smooth or apply the Meshsmooth modifier to create a very smooth text.

Back to our tutorial

First you’ll need to create a shape which will act as your 3D object base. You can either go to Create->Shapes and then select Text or use your sidebar window by making sure that the Create tab is highlighted, and then click on shapes and select the Text button in the Object type area.

Create text using the default Size setting in the Parameters area, and set font to Arial Black and type in a word/words in capital letters in the Text area.

Click in the front view of your viewports to create the text, zoom in or click on the Zoom extents in the bottom right hand corner of your 3Ds max application to zoom in the text spline shape if you can’t see it properly.

Next click on the Modify tab in your sidebar window, when selected click the modifiers drop down list and select the Bevel modifier to apply it to the 3D text spline shape you’ve just created.

Next you’ll need to use the Bevel Values to control how the shape extrudes to form a 3D object. When the Bevel modifier has been applied scroll down to find the Bevel Values section. At level one set Height to -3.5 and Outline to 2.8. This will set the first level of extrude from the shape. So think of it like building the 3D shape from the shape position and now building on further but level one is the first pull, just like building a house and building it half a way and then come back tomorrow to finish it. Your first level is complete and you should have a unfinished/half text and shown in the picture.

Next level will pull from the previous level you’ve just created. Set the Level 2: Height to -11.5 and Outline to 0.0. Level 2 acts as the main body, well in this tutorial. The other two levels; level 1 and level 3 act as the bevelled areas. This is why their outline parameters/values should all be equal.

So set level 3 to -3.5 and the Outline to -2.8, notice that level 1 and 3 are relative except that the Outline values are negative to each other. This is because of their in opposite of each other. I hope I’m clear on that.

By now you should have a very neat 3D text object. To add that smooth appearance around the text with that nicer inner extrudes on the 3D text sides; scroll up to the Surface section in the Parameters area. Make sure that Curved Sides is selected instead on the Linear Sides, and then set Segments to 6. And lastly check the Smooth Across Levels to further smooth it.

And there you’re your 3D text model is complete. Continue to play around with the parameters remembering to save first and probably you’ll come up with some really interesting results.

Quick tutorial summary

If you would like to go through this 3D tutorial very quickly and save you from reading to getting to the final results then this summary should offer you that.

First Create a text shape using default settings, set font to Arial Black and leave size 100.0

Apply the Bevel modifier.

Leave start Outline field to 0.0

For level one, type -3.5 for Height and 2.8 for Outline.

Check level 2, type -11.5 for Height and leave 0.0 for the outline.

Check level 3, type -3.5 for Height and -2.8 for Outline.

In the surface section;

Check Curved Sides.

Set Segments to 6 and check Smooth Across Levels.

And you should have a very nice 3D text model.

I have just created a much more advanced 3D object than the other 3D models that I have submitted here before. As you can see my skills are getting better. I started creating from a box object then halved it and applied the Symmetry modifier followed by the Meshsmooth and the shell modifiers. I actually thought it would take me a very long time to complete but it was easy and quick to finish. This is the type of mouse that I’m using on my HP laptop where I modelled this 3D model from. It is not very accurate to the actual really life mouse but has a very good overall shape of the mouse. There are some minor geometry errors as well, as you might see if you happen to download the 3D model and look carefully.

If you would like to use this model and use it, please do so as you’re welcome. The actual model in the file hasn’t been collapsed so the modifiers are still there at each level and you can go in and make your own adjustments if you wanted to. Expect to see more.

This was a quick continuation of my 3D and Animation practice. This 3D lamp object was created in 3Ds max. This was done using the box shape and the cylinder. It was really quick. In future you shall see some really complex lamps that I shall be modelling. I recently purchased some 3D max training DVDs so this should speed up my learning!

I am continuing part of my 3D and animation training. This 3D model bottle was created in 3Ds max. This is another simple yet more involved 3D modelling. I used the common tools of the Editable modifier and I applied the shell and MeshSmooth modifier. The all process was quite easy but I became more adapted and gained further confidence on the subject.

This is part of my training in 3D and Animation. I have just created a 3D model bottle. In this practice the object was quite advanced. I also explored the materials tool. Soon enough I shall be able to create some really advanced and complex 3D models. This was made from a box, I then modified the box using the Editable poly modifier. I l also used 2 circle shapes to trace/merge them on the object to create the bottle mouth and the extruded area below. The other modifiers I used were the shell and the smooth modifiers to finish of the object.
